DEFINITION
The class title of Police Sergeant within the Police Department is assigned to the patrol division. The class title of Sergeant is broken down into four ranks: Probationary Sergeant, Sergeant I, Sergeant II, and Sergeant III. Sergeant III rank performs a higher and more complex level of duties. When assigned to a patrol function, the Sergeant will be a Watch Commander during their tour of duty.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direct supervision from the Patrol Lieutenant or Chief of Police.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES - Important responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Prepares daily car plan assignments.
- Prepares and presents roll call training.
- Inspects personnel and equipment for conformity to Department standards.
- Reviews and approves various types of reports.
- Prepares and investigates personnel complaints.
- Responds to crime scenes at the request of police officers.
- Handles radio calls and dispatches personnel.
- Keeps the administration informed of issues of concern to them.
- Trains and supervises probationary officers.
- Performs related functions and any other duty requested.
Other Important Responsibilities and Duties
- Observes, retains, and recalls people, places, and situations in detail.
- Operates police vehicles and other equipment such as radar detection devices, tazer, copiers, etc. and reports on maintenance needs for assigned equipment.
- Demonstrates creativity regarding police related problems.
- Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the general public.
- Fulfills assigned internal duties.
- Maintains appropriate supplies for assigned area.
- Attend in-service training sessions or other sessions deemed appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications for Application
- Minimum 10 years experience as a police officer or a combination of police/military experience
- Have attended supervisor training (ex., first line supervisor training). All previous training will be reviewed.
- Have the ability to plan and execute detailed events
- Have the ability to train and evaluate Patrol Officers
- Be well-versed in Missouri statutes and, over time, the Neosho City Code.
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Missouri POST Peace officers license
- Must possess a valid Missouri driver’s license
- Successfully complete a background investigation.
- Must successfully complete pre-employment substance abuse testing.
- Will be subject to random substance abuse testing.
