Schroeder Family Exploreum Acquires Beloved Joplin Turkey Trot, Ushering in a New Era of Fun, Fitness, and Fundraising
Joplin, MO — June 13, 2025 — The Schroeder Family Exploreum is proud to announce its acquisition of the beloved Joplin Turkey Trot, presented by Freeman Health System, an annual Thanksgiving tradition that has brought families and friends together for fun, fitness, and community spirit for over 12 years. This exciting development ensures the continuation of the cherished event while supporting a meaningful new mission: STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) education for all.
The Joplin Turkey Trot, traditionally held on Thanksgiving morning, has long been a cornerstone event in the Joplin area. Under the stewardship of the Exploreum, the race will not only continue to celebrate community and health but will also become a key fundraising event for the center’s innovative current and future programs.
“By bringing the Turkey Trot under our wing, we’re not only preserving a cherished community tradition—we’re giving it a renewed sense of purpose,” said Joe Malin, Exploreum Board Member and Event Chair.
Exploreum Board President Audie Dennis echoed that sentiment: “We’re incredibly fortunate to carry forward such a beloved event, and equally grateful to have Freeman Health System as our presenting sponsor. From day one, Freeman has championed our mission, and their continued support is instrumental in making this transition a success.”
Executive Director Neely Myers emphasized the lasting impact: “We’re excited about what this means for the Exploreum today and for years to come. Proceeds from the Turkey Trot will directly fund hands-on exhibits, community outreach, and scholarships—empowering us to inspire and educate the next generation of scientists, engineers, and creative thinkers.”
The inaugural Turkey Trot under the Exploreum’s leadership will take place on November 27, 2025, starting and finishing at 300 S. Main. The event will feature multiple race options, including a 5K run/walk and a 1-mile family fun run—making it the perfect way to kick off Thanksgiving Day for participants of all ages. Community members, families, and sponsors are encouraged to join in the festivities and help support the Exploreum’s mission to make STEAM accessible and engaging for everyone in the region.
