About the Role
The Health, Safety & Environmental Technician position will work to ensure all employees uphold the core value of safety by implementing and maintaining American Tripoli safety programs. A successful Safety Representative will develop positive professional relationships while working closely with company associates, all levels of management, and outside agencies during all phases of operation. This is an on-site position in Seneca, MO.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
- Works to align company safety philosophy with actual work practices
- Completes observations of associates to ensure compliance using an electronic check sheet
- Upholds the core safety values of the organization
- Trains associates on safety expectations
- Conducts orientation activities such as completing and checking paperwork on new hires, validating required experience and licensure, and collecting I-9 documentation
- Orientation in Seneca, MO office
- Investigates incidents, injuries, damage to property or other safety-related concerns
- Completes incident reports, MSHA required documentation, and other reports related to safety
- Critically assesses and evaluates hazards as well as taking corrective actions in the moment
- Documents findings
- Communicates with HR, leadership, and associates what happened and recommendations for how to prevent similar occurrences
- Verifies corrective measures have been completed (including recommendations of the safety committee, leaders, and those that arise from the suggestion programs)
- Proactively suggests safety improvements, process improvements and personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep associates safe in all facets of our work
- Develops and maintains programs to encourage safety suggestions from others, improvements to working conditions that may impact safety, and processes that respect safety needs
- Enforces safety standards, quality assurance, conducts safety audits, participates in safety meetings or conference calls; conveys information to/from MSHA inspectors regarding specific safety requirements on site
- Coordinates with others to enforce work procedures, rules and regulations related to safety
- Posts safety communications in various locations as needed
- Establishes and maintains relationships with local safety agencies and insurance carriers to foster good communication between the company and external influences on safety
- Observes workers and evaluates job activities to determine the use of prescribed safety equipment such as glasses, helmets, goggles, respirators, clothing, harnesses, and other PPE
- Inspects new processes, materials, tools, substances, and equipment to identify hazards before an issue occurs
- Fills in for other associates who are out on vacation or leave, or in other situations
- Develops positive, professional relationships with all associates, all levels of leadership, outside agencies, and the general public
- Other duties as assigned
Required Education, Experience & Background:
- High School Diploma required
- MSHA or OSHA experience preferred
- 1-2 years experience in a safety-related role preferred
- MSHA, OSHA certifications are a bonus
- Training and presentation skills a plus
- Customer service experience and attitude
- Strong influencing skills required
- Coaching & mentoring
- Critical thinking skills
- Experience working with manufacturing and mining trades a plus
- Strong skills with organization, communication and attention to detail
- Computer proficiency is essential to the role
Physical Requirements of the Role:
- Climb ladders or scaffolding to perform inspections; occasionally work in confined spaces
- Occasionally work in an aerial lift
- May inspect trenches and excavations; climb steel cat-walks and other structures
- Stand for prolonged periods, stoop, climb, squat or walk
- Wear a respirator and personal protective equipment appropriate to the assigned work
- Work is occasionally outdoors with exposure to weather including high and low temperature extremes
- Exposure to manufacturing hazards and associated equipment
