Position Summary
Crowder College is looking for a Surgical Technology Clinical Coordinator that is responsible for ensuring appropriate educational clinical experiences for the surgical technology students and the availability of sufficient clinical slots/sites. The Clinical Coordinator will prepare students for clinical experience with lab practice, classroom lectures, and scheduling clinical orientation for the clinical placement. The Clinical Coordinator will maintain accurate records of clinical hours and surgical procedures of each student. They will also assist with assigning students to clinical sites with the Program Director of Surgical Technology and will observe students at various sites during clinical attendance. This position will be a combination of classroom lecture with a defined instructional course load along with clinical fieldwork supervision.
Essential Job Duties
Some of the duties listed below would be day-to-day management but will vary depending on the need(s) of the college. Priorities Include:- Plan, coordinate, facilitate, administer and monitor activities on behalf of the academic program and in coordination with the academic and clinical facility.
- Maintain accurate records of clinical hours and surgical procedures of each student.
- Make sure clinical courses are up-to-date, abreast of technology, and in compliance with state and national accreditation standards.
- Initiate clinical updates and revisions for continuous quality review in coordination with the Program Director.
- Work with Program Director to facilitate a program of student assessment and program evaluation to determine effectiveness of instruction and student achievement. Remains current with developments in the scholarship of teaching. Uses the latest supportive instructional technology and alternative delivery methods.
- Devote time and energy to maximize student learning outcomes including continuous improvement of student clinical experiences.
- Teach and educate students in accordance with needs, abilities, and identified potential, which includes: developing lesson plans and curriculum; developing learning plan materials; monitoring student progress to ensure academic success; assigning student grades; and teaching assigned subject(s).
- Prepare for assigned classes, including: develops course syllabi in Canvas; organizes and maintains classroom(s) to facilitate learning; works with area healthcare organizations to deliver instruction at those sites; maintains and updates existing course curriculum to meet required accreditation standards.
- Ensure orientation to the program’s requirements of personnel who supervise or instruct students at clinical sites and coordinates the assignment of students to clinical sites.
- Assist in course offerings and schedules.
- Assist in budget formation and expenditures for supplies, equipment, and materials.
- Assist in creating, hosting, and maintaining a program (BILT) Business and Industry Leadership Team.
- Assist in recruitment of students into the Surgical Technology program.
- Complete or assist with program reports, including but not limited to, annual program review, outcomes assessment, and advanced planning document.
- Create and monitor the clinical schedules.
- Develop and maintains relationships with district healthcare organizational leaders. Works collaboratively with these other external entities to promote student recruitment, retention, and job placement.
- Meet classes at the listed times.
- Encourage student inclusion and engagement by incorporating student correspondence, student assistance/remediation with coursework, and student involvement in course and program planning.
- Develop and maintains relationships with district healthcare organizational leaders. Works collaboratively with internal and external partners to recruit students. Markets the Surgical Technologist program and participates in planning for expansion of the student pool.
- Maintain regular office hours. Generally, that would include 8-10 hours per week.
- Maintain teaching course load in compliance with college and accreditation workload policy which includes teaching 9 hours per semester as a regular load and 18 credit hours per academic year. 12 hours (6 per semester) of release time for clinicals each Academic Year.
- Perform departmental and divisional responsibilities.
- Abide by the policies outlined in Crowder College's employee and faculty handbooks.
- Perform other related duties and non-instructional activities as assigned.
Other Instructional Responsibilities- Select appropriate texts and other course materials in conjunction with the program director.
- Adhere to student abilities and competencies listed in the institutional syllabi of courses taught.
- Submit required reports by deadlines.
- Serve on institutional committees, as needed.
- Support college activities.
- Attend Graduation Ceremonies in Spring and Fall.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Possess a credential in the field of Surgical Technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA) – Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Certified Surgical Technologist/Certified Surgical First Assistant (CST/CSFA).
- Possess a minimum of three years of relevant scrubs experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to plan, organize, and implement responsibilities effectively.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees, students, other professionals, and the public.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Surgical Technology.
- Experience with CAAHEP accreditation and program management.
- Two years of teaching experience at the higher education level.
- Knowledge of curriculum and program development, preferred.
- Proficiency in Canvas, learning management systems (LMS), and digital instructional tools.
- Information Technology abilities required:
- Ability to operate a computer using a Windows environment.
- Ability to operate a computer within the Crowder College network environment.
- Ability to utilize all relevant computer programs and systems.
- Ability to use email.
- Ability to use the Learning Management System (Canvas).
- Ability to use Microsoft Office.
- Surgical Technology Students in Clinicals
Working Environment
- Generally, working indoors in a standard office environment with some exposure to temperature changes, noise, dust, or chemicals.
- May be exposed to blood/body fluids/tuberculosis.
- Normal college working hours but adjustment of hours involving evening and/or weekend work will be required during certain periods of the year.
- Travel to clinical sites is required.

- In the OR, may be exposed to airborne or bloodborne pathogens and other potentially hazardous biological materials. Staff must adhere to strict infection control protocols and wear appropriate PPE at all times.
- The environment may also include exposure to surgical smoke, anesthetic gases, and other OR-specific hazards.
- Staff should be comfortable working in high-stress, fast-paced conditions that require attention to detail and adherence to safety standards.
Physical
- Requires daily mobility within the campus and various sites.
- Light lifting and physical activities involved in clinical supervision and teaching duties may be required occasionally.
- Input, access, and distribute information using computers.
