Spring Forward & Feel Your Best

Friends, with our transition to Spring our clinical staff is often asked for healthy tips to maximize enjoyment during the change in seasons. We all want to feel better than we have in the winter months, when as a community we spent much of our time indoors. Too much time inside, potentially isolated from friends and family can cause or exacerbate a host of mental and physical health issues.

In Part 1 of 2, consider these 5 tips for feeling your best, and as always please consult a doctor or appropriate healthcare professional before starting any diet, exercise program or lifestyle change.
Implementing healthy habits at an early age can lead to increased vitality as we get older, but it is never too late to start!

    1. Eat well!
High-fiber fruits, vegetables and whole grains are important. As seniors are prone to dehydration, they should drink plenty of water to stay energized and keep their bodies working at an optimal level.
    2. Focus on prevention!
Preventative care visits with health screenings for cholesterol levels, colon cancer, heart problems and other potential issues are important additions to your plan.
    3. Review your medications!
With a physician, review medications on a regular basis. Be cognizant to record any changes in condition and discuss with your doctor. Your doctor or healthcare professional is always the best source for directing your medication plan.
    4. Get some sleep!
Sleep is a critical component to healthy living, as our bodies and brains require a consistent sleep schedule to repair and recharge.
    5. Think!

Crossword puzzles, reading and writing, conversation, and taking on new hobbies help to stimulate our minds. In turn, mental stimulation helps in delaying or altogether discourages the potential for development of mental diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Healthy habits are key to a happy life. Spring is the perfect time to review and potentially adjust our behavior to optimize our mindset and bodies. We always want to focus on making our days count, instead of counting the days. Next time, we’ll discuss 5 more ways to feel your best!

    Until then, live well!
