Applications Open for A Brush with Kindness: Free Exterior Home Repairs for Neosho Area Residents
Neosho Area Habitat for Humanity is accepting applications for its A Brush with Kindness program, which provides light exterior home repairs for homeowners who are financially or physically unable to complete the work themselves. The deadline to apply is May 22, 2026.
A Brush with Kindness is an ongoing initiative for the Neosho non-profit that helps local homeowners maintain safe, decent housing through small-scale repair and maintenance projects.
According to Chris Fenske, Executive Director of the organization, typical projects include painting, weatherization, yard work, door or window repair, gutter cleaning, and other minor exterior repairs.
“Maintenance of home items can be overwhelming to some families that don't have the means to complete them,” Fenske said. “By maintaining a secure safe home, homeowners can maintain the value and thereby equity of their home. Also, having a project done that is unaffordable takes a weight off of homeowners in need.”
The program is designed for homeowners who meet specific qualifications including: owning and living in the home to be repaired, located in Neosho, and unable to complete the work due to physical or financial limitations. Additionally projects must primarily address health and safety issues and be feasible for completion by volunteers in one day.
“This program is important to our group because it gives us a way to help folks in need, apart from the need for a whole new house,” said board president John Styron.
Community members are encouraged to get involved by volunteering or donating to the program.
“Our hope is to increase the budget for this program which will allow for more projects of this nature to be adopted by our group,” Fenske said. For those wanting to make a hands-on impact then becoming a volunteer with the organization is an option.
“This program is the essence of giving. A brush with kindness makes a small difference to a family or individual that otherwise could not afford to have a project completed,” Fenske said.
Styron noted that A Brush with Kindness is a vital part of NAHFH’s mission.
Applications for A Brush with Kindness are open now through May 22, 2026. Homeowners interested in applying can contact Neosho Area Habitat for Humanity for more information or to request an application form.
