This year Neosho will be holding its 75th annual Laymen’s League services, all laymen of the area are invited to attend. This annual pre-Christmas week of services began when members of the Men’s Club of the Presbyterian Church decided that something should be done to remind the community of the spiritual meaning of Christmas. They spoke to other area churches and organized a weeklong series of services for laymen of the community. They figured about 50 people would attend each meeting and by the end of the week they had over 300 in attendance. In 1948 Peter Marshall, the Chaplain for the United States Senate was the featured speaker. To mark the 50th anniversary in 1996 Peter Marshall Jr. was invited to speak at the services, he still had the gold watch his father was presented a half-century earlier.
All services consist of prayer, scripture reading, music, and a speaker that talks about what Christmas means to them. Monday's speaker will be Cameron Kruse (Newton County Sheriffs Department) followed by Jarid Wilkinson (Conservation Agent), Jimmie Douglass (Chiropractor), Larry Perkins (Educator and former coach), and Scott Godberson (Chiropractor).
This year the early morning services will be held Monday, December 13th thru Friday, December 17th at The Canopy located at 100 N. College Street adjacent to Big Spring Park. Fellowship, coffee, and donuts begin at 6:00 a.m with services beginning at 6:30 a.m., services end by 7:00 a.m..
