• Behind the Build Event September 22nd

  •  Local College Students Collaborate with Neosho Area Habitat for Humanity and Build with Strength to Construct Low-Carbon Concrete Homes in Neosho Multiple local partners support new, sustainable, noncombustible, and affordable homes Neosho, MO – The Neosho Area Habitat for Humanity partnered with The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s (NRMCA) Build with Strength Coalition to build two unique and affordable homes in the community. The project represents the first Neosho Habitat homes to utilize insulated concrete forms (ICFs), a sustainable, noncombustible concrete building system that will reduce upfront expenses and on-site construction time while maximizing the structure’s durability and energy performsance. Students from Crowder College’s Building Technology Program are volunteering their time and efforts to help build these homes from the ground up. Community members, volunteers, local leaders, and media are invited to a “Behind the Build” event September 22nd from 10AM – 12PM on the project site at 414 Park Street, 64854 to celebrate the progress made and meet the many people and partners who have helped bring these homes to life. The event will feature remarks from local leaders, a guided hard-hat tour of the homes, and a “block signing ceremony” where attendees will have a chance to write well wishes and blessings for the Habitat families on the ICFs. Importantly, the event will offer an opportunity to meet and celebrate with one of the future Habitat homeowners and her family. The event is open to the press and interviews are available upon request. We’re excited to partner with Build with Strength on these two new homes,” said Pris Reed, Executive Director of the Neosho Area Habitat for Humanity. “One of the most important pillars of our organization is building decent, affordable housing for those in need. Build with Strength holds similar values. Their efforts are helping ensure more families have access to safe, resilient, cost-effective homes.” Several NRMCA members have donated and/or discounted materials for this build including, Joplin Concrete, GFL Environmental, Brundage Bone and Build Block. This project is part of a wider initiative between Build with Strength and Habitat for Humanity International to construct 50 sustainable concrete homes in 50 states in five years. To date, 46 homes have been constructed in 27 states since the initiative launched in February 2021. “This project offers a hands-on opportunity for our students to learn a new, innovative building system while also giving back to the community,” said Nathan Fent, Director of Career and Technical Education at Crowder College. “From a safety and sustainability standpoint, ICFs are the future of energy-efficient American home building.” One of the future Habitat homeowners, Jamie Speck, is a graduate of Crowder College. She’s now an elementary school teacher in the East Newton School District and will be moving in with her three sons early spring. ### About Neosho Area Habitat for Humanity: Neosho Area HFH is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization.
