Director of Nursing
Position Title: Director of Nursing
Reports To: Executive Director
FLSA Status: Exempt
Direct Reports: Yes
As the Director of Nursing (DON), reporting directly to the Regional Director of Clinical Operations and reporting indirectly to the Executive Director, you ensure the provision of quality nursing care in accordance with Federal, State and Local regulations while leading the nursing team to provide a top-notch experience to all residents. This role acts as the Administrator in the community in the absence of the Executive Director.
Essential Duties include the following:
?h Perform management and administrative duties in the absence of the Executive Director
?h Oversees, ensures and directly responsible for the delivery of quality care and services to our residents in compliance with the regulations pertaining to care plans and resident assessments
?h Directly oversees the delivery of care to residents to ensure that emotional, physical, psychological and safety needs are met
?h Administers medications and/or treatments for all residents, adhering to facility policies and procedures
?h Receives, processes, and follows explicit physician’s orders
?h Acts as first responder to resident emergency response system
?h Oversees and implements infection control, pharmaceutical and physical/chemical restraining policies and procedures, and assures that committee recommendations are carried out
?h Recruits, interviews, hires, staffs, leads, trains, and retains a high performing resident care team
?h Functions as a liaison between the residents, their families, staff and the general public - responding to inquiries and providing information on nursing care and services
?h Assesses potential residents for assisted living, independent living, and memory care level of care as well as those residents returning from a leave for appropriate placement and level of care
?h Develops nursing service objectives, policies and procedures, directs and implements these objectives
?h Manages and coordinates the work of all nursing and caregiver staff, communicating pertinent resident health and safety information to the appropriate staff
?h Responsible for maintaining a safe working environment through the prevention of accidents, the preservation of equipment, and the achievement of safe working practices
?h Creates and oversees the preparation of the departmental annual budget and maintains the operating budgets for personnel and medical equipment, in conjunction with the Executive Director
?h Maintains current knowledge of scope of practice for self and staff members and recognize legal implications when making nursing judgments/decisions
?h Other duties as assigned
?h Direct supervision of 10+ nursing staff members, which may also include housekeepers.
?h Overall accountable and responsible for the nursing care provided to the residents within the communities, ensures that the programs meet the desires and needs of the residents.
?h Overall accountable and responsible for the success of the nursing staff.
?h Interviews, hires, trains, plans, assigns and directs work of all Activity Team members, which may also include volunteers.
?h Ensures all Nursing Staff strictly adheres to all medical and communication logs, policies and procedures.
?h Three (3) years of nursing experience in a senior care community with proven leadership and organizational skills, LPN license required; however a RN license preferred.
?h Demonstrated compliance with State and Local regulations as well as professional standards and practices.
?h Great communication and interpersonal skills are required along with the heart and passion to work with older adults while providing the best care possible.
?h Proven experience in staffing, leading, developing and retaining a strong resident care team.
?h Demonstrates excellent observation, assessment and nursing judgment.
?h Must have the ability to remain calm in stressful situations, to be flexible, to work well with many interruptions and have skill in multi-tasking.
?h Respect for the principles of resident rights and confidentiality.
Education and/or Experience:
?h Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) and 4-6 years of past experience, preferred
?h Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) and 7-9 years of past experience
?h Accredited RN degree, preferred
?h Accredited LPN degree, required
?h Applicable State licensure, required
?h Must possess a general knowledge of laws and restrictions regarding Assisted Living, Memory Care and Independent Living (where applicable), as well as a solid understanding of opportunities and limits of other levels of care within senior living.
?h Must exhibit and promote a high level of customer service, hospitality, curiosity and friendliness towards all residents, visitors, associates and the overall community.
Proficiency in Internet Explorer, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word applications.
To perform this mission successfully, an individual should possess the physical ability to sit and stand for extending periods of time, bend, twist, and reach the floor. Hand/eye coordination should be sufficient to set up and administer injections, prepare/administer medications and treatments, and adjust flow rates using medical equipment. Should also be able to lift/move 50lbs, maintain a stationary position, move freely, operate equipment, ascend/descend freely, position self to reach equipment above or below normal standing height, and communicate with team members, residents, and residents’ family members.
