Our Downtown Events Committee will host the 8^th Annual Summer Social on the Square on Saturday, August 17^th from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on our Historic Downtown Square.  Our focus is to provide children of all ages an end of summer event with lots of fun and games with little or no expense to them or their parents.  That is why we ask that each participant provide free kids’ games.  If your business or club is interested in participating, please contact our Chamber Office.  We challenge your business or organization to participate in our 2^nd Annual Bathtub Races!  It will be a lot of fun!  Contact our Chamber Office for more information!

Neosho Crosslines Ministry is partnering with the annual We Care Fair for their 2013 Children’s Shoe Drive.  They have placed drop boxes at 8 locations in the Neosho area asking for “NEW” shoes for children of families in our local area who might not be in a position to purchase “back to school” shoes for their children.  The goal this year is to provide new shoes for 800-1000 children grades K-12.  With your help they know they can do this!  Boxes are at the following locations:  All three Community Bank and Trust facilities, both Boulevard Bank facilities, Goody’s Department Store, Newton County Courthouse, and the Crowder College Book Store.  Drop boxes will be in place from now until mid July.  Monetary donations may be sent to NCM PO Box 123, Neosho, MO 64850.  Please make checks payable to Neosho Crosslines Ministry and mark “shoe drive” on memo line.

The George Washington Carver National Monument invites you to their Carver Day Celebration on Saturday, July 13^th from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  There will be exhibitors, music performers, storytelling, guided tours, education programs and activities for kids.

The Neosho Exchange Club Golf Tournament will be Saturday, June 1^st at the Neosho Golf Course.  Two Person Scramble – $50 per person.  Call the Pro Shop at 451-1543 to schedule your tee time.  Proceeds are used to benefit programs for area youth and foster children and the upkeep of the American Flag displayed near the intersection by Wal-Mart.  For more information, call Steve Kelly at 455-8304 or 455-4783.

 Car, Truck & Motorcycle Show

The June Character Word for the Neosho R-5 School District Character Word of the Month is:  “Determination” – holding on to the principles of good character that have been learned and applying them every day.  Please incorporate this in your business and place it on your marquee.  Let’s show our Wildcat support!!

Congratulations to Tye Zola for being named this year’s Private School Teacher of the Year.  Mr. Zola is a Math Teacher at Neosho Christian School.  Congratulations to Yvonne McClintock, Beth Hunt, Sherry Hoover and Cindy Aldrich for being named this year’s Neosho R-5 School District Teachers of the Year.  Ms. McClintock is a Special Education Teacher at Benton Elementary, Ms. Hunt is a 5^th Grade Math & Science Teacher at Neosho Middle School, Ms. Hoover is an 8^th Grade English Teacher at Neosho Jr. High School and Mrs. Aldrich is a Social Studies Teacher and A+ Coordinator at Neosho High School.  Congratulations to Katie Strohl for being named this year’s Crowder College Teacher of the Year.  We would like to thank our teachers for the outstanding jobs they do for our future leaders.

 American Cancer Society Fundraiser

Branson’s very own Buckets N Boards will be at McDonald County High School on Friday, May 24^th at 7 p.m.  This is a great evening of entertainment for the whole family.  Tickets are $5.00 along with one canned good per person at the door.  Come and laugh the evening away as the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.  Sorry to have taken so long to reply.

 Project Soul, Live in Concert

Project Soul, Live in Concert will be held on Saturday, May 25^th at 9:00 a.m. at Kitchen Pass at 1212 S. Main St. – Joplin.  Doors open at 8:00 p.m.  $5.00 cover.  All proceeds go to help animal rescue efforts of Faithful Friends Animal Advocates.

The Newton County Historical Society will host an Ice Cream Social on Saturday, June 15^th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Newton County Historical Park.

 New Pedestrian Crossing Signal System Being Installed at Neosho High School

A new signalized pedestrian crossing is set to be installed on Neosho Boulevard at the Neosho High School beginning Monday, May 6^th.  During the work, which will take 3 to 4 weeks to complete, the existing pedestrian crossing will be closed. Sidewalks leading up to the crossing also will be closed.  Drivers can expect lane closings during the day and sometimes at night on Neosho Boulevard where crews are set up working.

What a Driver Will See
The new lights will be dark until a pedestrian activates the system by pushing a button. Then drivers on Neosho Boulevard will first see a flashing yellow light, then the light will turn solid yellow.  Shortly, the solid yellow light will go off and both of the red lights will turn on, indicating that all vehicular traffic must stop.  In a few more seconds, the two red lights will begin flashing in alternating fashion. Once this occurs, cars may proceed after stopping unless a pedestrian is approaching or is still crossing in the driver’s lane.

What a Pedestrian Will See
As pedestrians approach the signal, they will see a standard “Don’t Walk” pedestrian symbol (dark orange hand). After pushing the button, pedestrians must wait until they see a “Walk” pedestrian symbol (white figure) before crossing.  After a few seconds, the pedestrian silhouette will begin flashing orange and there will be a countdown to zero. When the orange silhouette is flashing, the red lights stopping cars will begin flashing as well.  After the flashing begins, pedestrians will have adequate time to get all the way across the street and drivers will be able to travel through the crossing if the pedestrians have passed.

Tickets are $25 a person and include an appetizer and a drink or three drinks from the event menu.  Entertainment is provided by Jim Graham with No Apparent Reason.  All proceeds to benefit the 2013 Strong Kids Campaign.

The Neosho R-5 School District Charitable Foundation’s Excellence in Education Banquet will be held on Thursday, April 25^th at 6:30 p.m. at the Neosho High School Cafeteria.  Tickets are $40 per person, $320 for a table of eight.  For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Tonya Patterson at 451-8600.

 “Cinema in The Civic” will be held on Friday, April 26^th at 7:00 p.m. at The Civic.  We will be showing “The Lorax”.  It’s free and open to the public.  The movie is being sponsored by Silhouette Imaging.  There will be concessions!  Invite your family and friends!

 Herman Jaeger Festival

The Neosho Arts Council invites you to their Herman Jaeger Festival April 26^th – May 5^th.  There will be a lot of activities happening!  The “Herman Jaeger, Master of the Vineyard” Exhibit will be at The Civic from April 26^th – May 4^th from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. – free and open to the public.  There will be a Wine & Food Pairing Dinner on Saturday, April 27^th at 6:30 p.m. at The Civic.  Tickets are $50 per person (includes food, wine and gratuity) – limited seating (contact Tammy Franks at 451-1040 for reservations).  The 4^th Annual ArtSquared Spring Art Show & Sale will be Friday, May 3^rd from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. & Saturday, May 4^th from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at The Civic.  Boulevard Bank is hosting the Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest on Saturday, May 4^th from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  WALRUS Concert on Saturday, May 4^th at 7:00 p.m. at The Civic.  Please see the attached schedule of events!

 Art in the Park

The George Washington Carver National Monument will host Art in the Park on Saturday, April 27^th from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  Artists will conduct art workshops throughout the day.  A “budding artists” area will feature natural dyes, painting color swatches and other children’s art activities.  At 11:00 a.m. guest artist Lowell Davis from Carthage will provide a special presentation.  Plan to attend this fun-filled day and be inspired by the beauty of nature captured in the artwork.

 4^th Annual Evening of Jazz

Crowder College Foundation will host an Evening of Jazz on Tuesday, April 30^th at The Civic.  6:00 p.m. – pre-event mixer; 6:30 p.m. – performances by Neosho High and McDonald County High Jazz Bands, 7:15 p.m. – Jazz performance by Crowder Jazz Orchestra.  Table seating is available for the pre-event mixer complete with wine, hors d’oeuvres and floor seating during the concert.  Each table seats 8 and is available for $250 (or $30 per seat).  General admission for balcony seating is $5.  For more information, call 455-5646 or foundation@crowder.edu. 

 Family Fun Fest

The Neosho Freeman Family YMCA is hosting a Family Fun Fest on Thursday, May 2^nd from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the YMCA.  This is a free community event to encourage kids and families to be active.  In addition to the games, the Power Puff Women’s Only 5K race begins at 6:00 p.m.  For more information, call 455-9999.

 Safe Kids Day

The Newton County Health Department & the Alliance of Southwest Missouri will hold the annual “Safe Kids Day” event on Friday, May 3^rd from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. on the Health Department parking lot at 812 W. Harmony.  Parents will be able to get their children’s fingerprints & a photo id.  There will be safety demonstrations, kid’s games, activities and lots of prizes & freebies.  A $1.00 donation is requested for the photo id but there is no charge for most of the activities.  Any business or organization that would like to participate may call the Newton County Health Department at 451-3743.

 Car & Bike Cruise Night

Our Downtown Events Committee has scheduled their 6^th Annual Car & Bike Cruise Night to be held on Saturday, May 4^th from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Neosho’s Historic Downtown Square.  There will be cars, bikes, music, food and fun for all!  There is no registration fee.  Dash Plaques sponsored by Stouffer Communications.

Party with WALRUS (Classic Rock of the Four States) on Saturday, May 4^th from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. at The Civic.  There will be a dance floor, cash bar and the Neosho Rotary Club will be selling brats!  Tickets are $5.00 and are available at the following locations:  Red Carpet Real Estate, Silhouette Imaging, First Community Bank and our Chamber Office.

The students of the Neosho R-5 School District will be taking achievement tests April 15^th – May 10^th.  During this testing window, please support our students by putting a message of encouragement regarding achievement testing on your marquee.  Sample messages:  MAP to Success, Good Luck on the MAP, Do Your Best on the Test, Our MAP Goal – Top Scores.

 Healthy Parks Healthy People

The George Washington Carver National Monument invites you to their “Healthy Parks Healthy People” on Saturday, May 4^th from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.  Join them for a fun day in the park!  Create your own healthy trail mix with dieticians, take a walk with a park ranger, participate in science experiments, health and wellness presentations, bicycle safety workshops, exercise classes, outdoor games and activities for the kids, free blood pressure checks and much more related to healthy living at this free special event!

All Human Resource Managers are invited to come to the YMCA on Friday, May 10^th from 7:00 – 8:30 a.m.  The YMCA will be hosting an HR Social, with coffee and breakfast items, to share with you the benefits of a corporate partnership with the YMCA.  All area HR managers are invited to attend whether you have a partnership with the YMCA or not.
